U.S. Mint Liberty Bell-Shaped Coins and Medal Launch July 16
The U.S. Mint will open sales on July 16 for three Liberty Bell-shaped collector products tied to America’s 250th anniversary: a 1 oz .9999 fine gold coin priced at $19,600, a 1/2 oz gold coin at $10,050, and a 1/2 oz .999 fine silver medal at $750. All three are strictly limited to 2,026 units, with household orders capped at one of each, making this a highly constrained numismatic launch rather than a broad bullion release. The unusual Bell-shaped format is being touted as a first for recent U.S. coinage, with the Mint saying the pieces required hand-loading and pressing in its Philadelphia R&D lab because of the production precision needed. The two gold issues carry $250 and $125 face values respectively, while the silver piece has no denomination. For metals traders, the direct market impact looks limited: this is collector demand, not investment demand, and the tiny mintage means negligible flow effect for spot gold or silver. Still, the launch is a useful gauge of retail appetite for high-premium U.S. Mint products and may attract attention to physical gold/silver collectibles into the semiquincentennial cycle.
